Fair Deal

Define: Truman’s plan as president (similar to FDR’s New Deal)

Significance: His laws weren’t passed b/c conservatives controlled Congress

Taft-Hartley Act

Define: a law limiting union power

Significance: Truman vetoed it but Republicans overrode his veto

Baby Boom

Define: the rise in the number of babies born after WWII

Significance: births increased sue to increased real income and marriage rates

Levittown

Define: the first planned suburb

Significance:the GI Bill and cheaper production made it affordable to young couples

Sunbelt

Define: the sunnier part of the US (especially California, Texas & Florida)

Significance: people moved here after WWII for better jobs and weather

Interstate Highway System

Define: a network of highways built to connect major cities throughout the US

Significance: it was to help with Cold War defense and improve our economy

 

Rock ’n’ Roll

Define: popular youth music of the Fifties (blended rythem and blues with country)

Significance: spread quickly as record players became affordable to teens

Suburbia

Define: a term referring to the suburbs and the people who lived there

Significance: seen as an idyllic place but also one of conformity & materialism

The Organization Man

Define: a book criticizing the conformity of suburbia and corporate jobs

Significance: it said that we give up our individuality

Beat Movement

Define: a group of writers & poets who criticized the conformity of the Fifties

Significance:Beats also challenged traditional writing  styles (e.g. with stream of consciousness)

Youth Culture

Define: the youth rebelled against their parents with music, movies & slang

Significance: technology and money allowed teens to develop their own culture

 

Housing Act of 1949

Define: it’s goal was to provide a decent home for every American family

Significance: many of the new “projects” returned to slum conditions

Appalachia

Define: the mountainous region in the South

Significance: contains high levels of poverty after the decline of the coal industry

Agribusiness

Define: high-tech, large-scale farming by corporations

Significance: its efficiency put many small farmers out of business

Termination Policy

Define: Congress ended its responsibility for American Indians

Significance:ended federal aid to tribes & distributed tribal land to its individuals

Voluntary Relocation Program

Define: it gave aid to American Indians (transportation, housing & a job)

Significance:  it encouraged American Indians to move to the cities
