Fall Mini Research Essay
  1. Issue Identification: Select an example of US intervention between 1880 and 1920. The intervention should be significant enough to have readily available research on it and to provide you with something to write about. View the textbook or the following sites for ideas:
    • http://academic.evergreen.edu/g/grossmaz/interventions.html
    • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_United_States_military_operations
  2. Research & Works Cited Page: In addition to your text, use the following sites to find information on what happened, why the US intervened and what the major consequences were for both the US and the other location. While you are conducting your research, copy and paste the MLA citations and save them for your works cited page. Go to the www.hamiltonhighschool.net (or this link if the other address isn't working: http://hamiltonhs-lausd-ca.schoolloop.com/), click on library and then LAUSD DIgital Library to find the following list:
    • Salem History -> search
    • ABC-CLIO -> American history -> search
    • Britannica Online -> High School -> search
    • EBSCO -> History Reference Center -> US History -> 1878-1913 or search
    • Oxford Reference Online -> History -> search
  3. Write Essay: Your essay should be organized to reflect your thesis that includes the following components:
    • Issue: the intervention of your choosing
    • Topic of Focus: the reasons for the intervention
    • Point of View: the US intervened for realist/idealist reasons (or a combination)
    • Consequence: how the intervention affected the US, the location, the future, etc.
  4. Essay Criteria: (see the writing page for assistance)
    • Properly formatted and typed essay using MLA guidelines
    • The essay should include multiple paragraphs (probably 3-6) that reflect your thesis.
    • Your evidence (which includes properly integrated quotes) should be cited parenthetically). It is very important that you cite where you got evidence or ideas from even if you write it in your own words. If you use other's words than you must cite your source and use quotation marks.
    • MLA Works Cited page with at least 3 sources
